Winter Wellness – Preventing Dehydration

Baby, it’s cold outside! That should come as no surprise. It is December, after all. From my window, I see the first real snow fall of the season. Forecasters predict we’ll have several inches accumulation by day’s end.

The scene is beautiful, pristine, ‘Wintry White’.  But we haven’t felt these temperatures since last year – so, Brrrr!!! Bundle up and stay warm.

Here are some Winter Wellness tips to help you stay hydrated & healthy, plus an electrolyte drink recipe from HERBSPEAK, below.

1. Stay well hydrated.
This colder weather depletes our bodies’ fluids. People of all ages (yes, Babies too) experience dehydration. Fluids are essential to our body and brain functions. Hydration is just as vital to digestive wellness & healthy bowels. So, drink plenty of liquids – carry water, juice or tea as you go about your day. Herbal teas like chamomile, raspberry, peppermint taste great, help hydrate and provide us with extra warmth as we drink. Nourishing soups are also a wonderful choice!

Signs of Dehydration –
The Mayo Clinic posted the following warning signs for dehydration.

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual
  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output — no wet diapers for three hours for infants and eight hours or more without urination for older children and teens
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness or light-headedness

Please seek immediate medical attention if the above symptoms persist or if you or your loved ones develop extreme thirst, shriveled skin, inability to urinate, dizziness, confusion, lack of tears when crying.

It’s a good idea to keep an electrolyte rich drink on hand, for emergencies.  While we don’t endorse any particular product,particularly those with refined sugar, food coloring or other chemicals –  a few of the well-known, easily accessible, off the shelf products are: Smart Water, Gatorade, Emergen-C powder -dissolved in water). While we prefer an organic diet and lifestyle, dehydration emergencies call for quick action. Prepared beverages may be a life saver.

Easy Recipe ~ Electrolyte Replacement drink with recognizable, wholesome ingredients.

1 large organic Apple
3-4 carrots
2-3 stalks of celery

Cut up into chunks. Add all to a blender.  Blend on High for about 10 seconds. Add the juice of 1/2 lemon. Voila!
